The initiator of the 1995 petition was Dom GĂ©rard Calvet, the Abbot of Le Barroux.
The petition read as follows:
Most Holy Father,
In sincere and wholehearted submission to the living Magisterium of the Church and in consideration of “the lawfulness as well as the enrichment for the Church of a diversity of charisms and of spiritual and pastoral traditions” we most earnestly beseech Your Holiness to grant, for the sake of peace within the Church, free use of the liturgical books of 1962 for the celebration of Holy Mass and of the other sacraments.
The Deputy Chairman of Pro Missa Tridentina (Germany), the philosopher Robert Spaemann (1927–2018), dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of Munich University, wrote in a letter inviting signatures:
By signing the petition, one does not necessarily document a personal attachment to the classical Roman liturgy. It would be sufficient motivation to feel that the on- going presence of this liturgy in Europe is in itself eminently desirable, or that one’s sense of justice is outraged by the official disparagement of those Catholics who simply wish to continue praying in the manner of their forebears.
This petition gathered around 70,000 signatures, of which 31,269 were from France, 17,605 from Germany, 3,724 from Switzerland, and 3,591 from Austria.
